[BUG FIX] Copyto API

Our API, https://api.copyto.co, had a terrible bug that deactivated free accounts whenever Chrome 1.4 extension is used. Issue is fixed from the API side so there is no need for an update to the extension. If you think your account is affected (deactivated) please contact us immediately.

Copyto Chrome extension 1.4 is our first browser plugin to include the v2 updates of Copyto.co. It has quite a lot of differences than its previous version. Below you can see the new look;

Some of the main updates are;

It doesn’t activate the clipper by default. If you just want to bookmark a page without clipping you can do it pretty fast.
Fetches the title, notes and labels you have for the current url from your account if you have already bookmarked this url before. This way you can edit the details or just check what information you have about the current url. (Little green check icon on the top right indicates that this url is saved before)
Enables you to search your bookmarks. Once again its a full text search meaning that your keywords are searched inside the body of the url not just title or notes. Without even going to copyto.co you have the contents of all your bookmarks one click away.

Lately I have been working on a new appearance for Copyto.co and it is finally ready with some other cool features that kind of come along as extra. Before starting to describe what’s new, here is how your new dashboard looks like;

Some of the new features include;

List view with an email inbox style look and image view that shows only the thumbnails of your bookmarks.
Adjusted bookmark width to fit into your browser window beautifully while browsing in fancy or image mode.
Auto fetch details of a new bookmark if you’ve saved it before and edit details of it just before saving.
You will never lose any label. Instant search and sorting to all your labels from the menu located on the right-top of your dashboard.
Dig in multiple labels. Search for bookmarks that contain multiple labels that you select.
Updated bulk editing mode that makes selection of your bookmarks more usable.
Configurable bookmark link destinations. You can configure whether you want to go to the original url or the cached page and whether to show it inside a popup or a new tab. (from the settings page)

Hackerne.ws for your startup promotion

If you have a new web startup like I do and have just launched your product, you are probably looking for ways to promote it without having to spend money on advertising because you don’t have any budget for it yet…

Sure there are a lot of other ways which I will hopefully talk about in upcoming posts but if you recently started promotional activities my recommendation for you will be posting your startup to hackerne.ws for a review.

HN is definitely a great place to share your startup to receive useful comments and feedback from people just like yourself. You can receive feedback on your idea, design, business model and pretty much anything that will actually be key ingredients to your success.

You will also have the chance to enter in a hot discussion with some competitors like I did with guys from historio.us and pinboard.in.

Also most of the people on HN are your potential members because of one simple fact: They are just as curious as you are for new things going on in the web arena. Check out the main page, you will see that it looks like a member edited version of Mashable or Techcrunch in a plain text format.

The best thing about HN is that you don’t have to beg anyone to write about you but you do it yourself. If the community has interest you will find your news on the first page in a few minutes. Being on the first page meant 5K visitors to Copyto in one day but I believe achieving something better is quite possible.

All the feeds and RTs about you make the news spread everywhere and you will start to receive write ups in some blogs and feedback emails from a lot of people.

Copyto Firefox Jetpack add-on

It took us a little longer than expected to prepare the Copyto Firefox add-on but it is finally ready! The reason behind this delay is choosing Jetpack SDK for our development and hard times we had finding solutions to our problems (don’t get it wrong we are more than happy with Jetpack).

For anyone out there wondering about development with Jetpack, we can say that our experience was quite good.

Jetpack provides a very convenient and easy to use API. Especially for our case it was quite easy for us to:

Inject css and js (including jQuery) into the current page
Authenticate the user and save the authentication
Communicate with copyto.co

As the whole point of Copyto is finding the information easier we have a mobile version of Copyto where you can add new bookmarks or browse through your existing ones with ease. While using the mobile version your saved pages will be mobilized to make reading it as easy and fun as possible.
